A Guide To Staying In Positano

First things first… Where is Positano?

Positano is a small town along Italy’s scenic Amalfi Coast located between Sorrento and Amalfi.

While it may be a challenge to get to Positano, or other towns along the Amalfi Coast, the view getting there is worth it!

So, how do I get there?

There are a few different ways you can get to Positano, and the way you choose totally depends on what works best for you personally.

option 1:

The first way to get there is to take a high speed train (we traveled by Italo, which I highly recommend) from wherever you are to Salerno. From Salerno, you can take an hour fairy ride with several stops (the last being Positnao). The upside to this is the views you will have traveling along the coast by ferry.

option 2:

Another way to get there, and probably the cheapest (not necessarily the easiest) is to fly into Naples, or take a high speed train to Naples from wherever you are coming from (we traveled by Italo, which I highly recommend). For reference, it is about a 2.5 hour ride from Florence to Naples and about an hour ride from Rome to Naples. Once you are in Naples you can a local train called the Campania Express to Sorrento. However, from there, you will need to take a local bus from Sorrento to Positano (and of course make sure all your times for the trains and buses align). Now, this will definitely be the cheapest option, but will be a lot of traveling and rather hectic.

You can always modify this option by taking the Campania Express to Sorrento and then getting a taxi to take you directly to where you are staying in Positnao, which is still less expensive than option 2.

option 3:

** This is what we did — Once you arrive in Naples, you can simply hire a private driver. Now, this is of course the most expensive option, but I think it was worth EVERY euro! We hired the same private driver we had for our honeymoon named Tonino (Tony) who is literally one of my favorite people we met on our trip! He works for Aldo Limos (who you can contact and request Tony). However, if you have WhatsApp, you can message him directly at +393337386318 and tell him Suzie and Jonathon Reckles sent you!

The best thing about having Tony, was that it was like having a private tour guide! He has lived in the Amalfi Coast for most of his life, and is extremely knowledgeable. Another major perk to having a private driver is you can easily access and tour the other areas of the Amalfi Coast. We had hired Tony for 1 and a half days. The first day, he picked us up around noon from the train station at Naples. From there, he drove us to the city of Pompeii, which was truly one of the most amazing things I have ever seen! After Pompeii, we drove through Sorrento and stopped for a drink, and then he dropped us off at our hotel in Positano. The next day, he picked us up at our hotel and we visited the towns of Amalfi, and Ravello (where we stopped for lunch).

Since the Amalfi Coast is mostly one big winding road along a cliff, it takes a decent amount of time to get from one city to the next (and not to mention the driving is not the easiest, which I why I do NOT recommend renting a car).

Phew… Now that you have made it to Positano, its time to enjoy everything this gorgeous town has to offer. If you know about Positano, you know that it is not the cheapest place to vacation. That being said, Airbnb is always an option! Since Positano is built up in the cliffs, be prepared for lots of walking and stairs. If this is a concern for you, make sure to contact wherever you are planning on staying to inquire about the amount of stairs.

We chose to stay at the beautiful Casa Buonocore which is located right in the middle of Positano. Fair warning there are about 70 steps to get to the main entrance (don’t worry, they have someone to help you with your luggage), but the exercise was much needed after all the pasta, pizza, wine, and gelato we had been eating!

The best part about Casa Bunocore aside from the location, was how quaint, well designed, and immaculate it was. I loved that it had more of an exclusive feel since there are only 8 rooms. We stayed in the Junior Suite, which included 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a spacious living room and 2 balconies overlooking Positano. Also, every morning you can go down to the main patio and enjoy a fresh spread of different pastries, fruits, yogurts, cheeses and meats (and of course cappuccinos).
